Unfurling Voices
Completion: 2021
Location: Howard County Circuit Courthouse , Ellicott City, MD
Description: Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., standing in the midst of the Civil Rights movement - confronted the many systems of oppression and proclaimed the words of the Prophet Amos: “Let justice roll down like waters, and righteousness like a mighty stream.” In the absence of access to justice, people are unable to have their voices heard and exercise their rights. This prophetic passage is a call to action, to rebuild a more just rule of law that allows equal access to all. This is the inspiration for “Unfurling Voices.” The gesture of the unrolling scroll represents how the law is embodied by people: the law as practical wisdom. Viewed from top to bottom, the scrolls begin to unfurl, transforming into topographic lines that recall the rolling landscape of Howard County.
